Cal Poly Opens John Madden Football Center
Cal Poly Athletics ushered in a new era for Mustang football on Saturday, June 6, celebrating the ribbon cutting and unveiling of the John Madden Football Center. The event brought together alumni, donors, supporters, student-athletes and members of the Madden family.
Named in honor of Cal Poly alumnus, Hall of Fame coach and iconic broadcaster John Madden, the center embodies the values that defined his remarkable life and career: preparation, teamwork, leadership and opportunity.
The transformative $45 million project serves as the new home of Cal Poly Football and stands among the most significant athletics facilities investments in university history. Designed to support every aspect of the student-athlete experience, the center provides Mustang Football with a modern headquarters for training, recovery, nutrition, team development and program operations while honoring the legacy of one of Cal Poly's most distinguished alumni.
Binghamton University Plans New Wrestling Facility
Binghamton wrestling will soon see a dramatic rise in the size and scope of its practice environment. The Division of Athletics announced Friday that a new 8,200-square-foot space will be constructed in the West Gymnasium. The repurposed space on the gym's south court will become the permanent practice home for the Bearcats under second-year head coach Ryan LeBlanc.
The project includes a mat space of 5,200 square-feet, cardio and weight training area, student-athlete and coaches' locker rooms and a sports medicine area.
The new space will more than double the size of the team's current wrestling room.
"The expansion of our wrestling room is a tremendous investment in the future of Binghamton Wrestling," LeBlanc said. "I want to thank President D'Alleva and our athletics administration for their leadership, vision, and support throughout this project.
Northwest Missouri State Plans Improvements to Bearcat Stadium
Northwest Missouri State University's Athletic Department announced on May 22 that Bearcat Stadium is undergoing a series of improvements to enhance athlete experience, fan comfort, and technology.
The improvements include replacing the turf on Mel Tjeerdsma Field, installing new premium seatbacks with foldable bottoms to improve fan accessibility, and expanding the videoboard by 34% to enhance the viewing experience.
The turf was last replaced in 2015. After nearly a decade, Athletic Director Dr. Andy Peterson noted clear signs that a new surface was needed for athletes.
"We were beginning to experience some issues with the turf, such as seams coming apart, which resulted in a few soft tissue and ankle injuries," Peterson said. "These issues occurred when athletes stepped into uneven spots on the field during games."
