Albertville City (Ala.) Breaks Ground on $6.1M Female Athletic Center

Albertville City Schools broke ground on a $6.1 million athletic center for female athletes, addressing a space shortage driven by explosive population growth.

The district’s student population has grown steadily for years, filling classrooms and forcing sports teams to compete for practice space. Albertville’s population under age 18 has increased nearly 30% in the last 10 years, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

“We average about 450 students per grade level and in many schools across the state of Alabama 460 students represents a school,” Superintendent Bart Reeves said.

The new facility, expected to be completed around August, will be built on campus next to the current gymnasium. It will provide dedicated space for girls cross country, track, flag football and cheerleading teams that currently have no space of their own.

Wheeling University Breaks Ground on Stadium Renovation Project

After months of planning and preparation, the Wheeling University Athletic Department is breaking ground. Phase one of the project will begin on Tuesday, June 16, at 2:30 p.m. with a groundbreaking ceremony at Bishop Schmitt Field.

Phase one of the project will feature a complete overhaul of the Bishop Schmitt Field playing surface and the installation of the field events, including new long jump and pole vault pits. Wheeling University Athletics is committed to providing its student-athletes with the best possible training and competition environment, and this project represents the first step toward achieving that goal.

"It's always a great day to be a Cardinal, but especially today." said Wheeling University Athletic Director Carrie Hanna. "We are so excited to be able to provide our student-athletes with these upgrades, giving them a new and improved home to train and compete. We can't thank Panhandle Cleaning and Restoration and WesBanco Bank enough for their support of our student-athletes and for helping this university continue to grow. We can't wait to see our Cardinals fly high in this new facility now and for years to come."

The vote took place after a long debate between trustees and the district about tabling the item until more research could be done on other options presented by trustee Chris Coker.
