Iowa Moves Forward With Plans for Arena Renovation
The University of Iowa moved forward with plans to modernize Carver-Hawkeye Arena.
This week, the Iowa Board of Regents approved renovations for the project, which could cost up to $70 million.
University leaders said they're exploring options to address one of the most common fan complaints: the lack of air conditioning.
"We will, as a part of this design process for this project, be designing and exploring the options for effective cooling of the building," University of Iowa architect Rod Lehnertz said.
Calvert Catholic Schools Breaks Ground on Multipurpose Athletics Facility
Calvert Catholic Schools has announced the groundbreaking of a new multipurpose facility at its Calvert High School campus.
Located on the corner of Jefferson and Madison streets, the complex will support football, track and field, baseball, softball, cheerleading, marching band and additional athletic and extracurricular programs, according to a press release.
The Advertiser-Tribune spoke with one of the project's main investors, who wished to remain anonymous.
The idea originated a couple of years ago, he said, and initially centered on building a small practice structure on land near the Calvert field house. Flood plain concerns redirected the project, and planning shifted to a site by the school.
Bemidji State University Athletics and the BSU Alumni & Foundation are proud to announce a renovation project for the BSU Gymnasium, providing upgraded experiences and a new era for Beaver Basketball, Beaver Volleyball, and the greater Bemidji community.
The project, which is privately funded through donor support and crowdfunding, is scheduled to break ground in March 2027 and be completed in October 2027. The finished product will feature new bleachers, a viewing room, accessibility upgrades, and the newly minted Buckingham-Baalke Court.
Alumni Trent and Beth (Buckingham) Baalke are leading the philanthropic charge with a $1 million lead donation to the project, which positions it as a transformational gift within the Facility Upgrades and Faculty Excellence pillar of the For the North campaign. The Baalkes view the renovations as an opportunity to give back in recognition of all they were given as student-athletes.
"We're fortunate to be in a position to help and to better the experience for students. Because somebody once did it for us," Trent Baalke said. "We wouldn't be where we are without Bemidji State University. BSU set us up for success and for the life we have with each other, so we're excited to give back."
