Planning Commission Approves Edgewood High School's Stadium Improvements
The Madison Plan Commission approved Edgewood High School’s plan to make several improvements to its stadium, a proposal that has drawn both support and concern from nearby residents.
"The improvements here are now being done to expand the use of the site but rather give a more comfortable environment." said Brian Munson, Madison resident
In the past, residents from the Vilas and Dudgeon-Monroe neighborhoods clashed with Edgewood over the school’s request to add stadium lights. More recently, the school and the two neighborhood groups came together to support a plan for stadium upgrades.
The proposal calls for four new buildings on the grounds surrounding the field. School representatives said the improvements are intended to make the site more comfortable, not to expand its overall use.
The project would replace the current metal bleachers with a building that includes locker rooms, ticketing space, offices and storage. Edgewood also plans to add seating for about 1,200 people and a press box above that building.
Austin College Announces Construction of Foster Hyde Athletic Center
Austin College has announced it will break ground on a new athletic training and development facility this summer, with completion expected in spring 2027. The facility will be named the Foster Hyde Athletic Center in honor of Mike ’86 and Rexanne Foster and Blake Hyde ’86, who are largely responsible for the necessary funds to construct the facility. Several other gifts made the project possible, including leadership gifts from Roger ’76 and Bunny Luttrell, Ward ’76 and Sheri McCarley ’76, Sarah Gunderson ’81, and Tom Hall ’78.
Austin College engaged Mammoth Sports Construction to work closely with Athletics staff and College leadership to develop a roadmap for addressing the College’s current and future athletics facilities needs for the next 15-20 years.
Copperas Cove Eyes Destination Sports Complex
A tournament destination for sports such as softball, baseball, and soccer could be coming to Copperas Cove.
The city is moving forward on an outdoor sports complex concept after council gave approval earlier this month.
In March, the city’s Parks and Recreation team sent out a feasibility study for a new outdoor sports complex. Those findings were presented to City Council on July 7 by an organization called Sports Facilities Companies, which cited comparable venues in Odessa, Round Rock, and Burleson.
The study analyzed tournament draw using a four-hour drive-time radius, estimating a market of more than 25 million people. As for the price tag, models range from $42 million to $52 million.
