UTSA Cuts Ribbon on New Basketball & Volleyball Training Center
UTSA Athletics celebrated the grand opening of the 53,048-square-foot, state-of-the-art Basketball & Volleyball Training Center (BVTC) on Wednesday with a press conference, ribbon cutting ceremony, and tours for guests and media.
The facility, which was completed at a cost of more than $35 million, is located next to the Roadrunner Athletics Center of Excellence (RACE) on Barshop Boulevard and now houses the daily operations of the UTSA volleyball and men’s and women’s basketball programs.
“I am grateful for this special moment in the trajectory of our intercollegiate athletics enterprise. This state-of-the-art practice facility is essential to our aspirations for our women’s and men’s basketball and volleyball programs,” UT San Antonio President Taylor Eighmy said. “Today, we are so fortunate to recognize our essential partnerships with the City of San Antonio and Bexar County, and the generosity of our many wonderful donors in making this facility a reality. We have more work to do across the enterprise, but this day is a special day, and I am deeply appreciative of the leadership of Dr. Lisa Campos, Senior Executive Vice President Andrea Marks and their teams for making days like today possible.”
LAUSD Breaks Ground on New Sports Complex
Superintendent Andrés E. Chait and other Los Angeles Unified School District officials hosted a groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday to launch the Athletic Upgrades Project at Westchester Enriched Sciences Magnets, which will include a new track, physical education building and new football, softball and baseball fields, to be completed by next year.
The project is funded by $9.2 million from the district and $5 million from Lulu’s Place, one of the largest private donations in recent district history.
LAUSD Board Member Nick Melvoin also spoke at the event
Also on hand was Doug Kimmelman, executive chair and the founder of Energy Capital Partners investment firm, who is also founder of Lulu’s Place, a non-profit organization that aims “to create a transformational nonprofit youth center that combines top-quality academic, athletic, and wellness programs for underserved youth in Los Angeles,” according to the group’s website. The organization’s own new campus is under construction not far away, in Playa del Rey, next to St. Bernard High School.
Autauga County Schools Breaks Ground on Three New Athletics Training Facilities
Autauga County Schools have begun building new athletic training facilities for girls at Marbury High School, Prattville High School, and Billingsley School. The goal is to provide female student-athletes with more space and equal resources.
Construction at all three campuses started this summer. The facilities should be finished and ready for students by the beginning of 2027.
These new facilities are being built as more girls join high school sports like flag football, wrestling, volleyball, softball, track and field, tennis, and golf. Before this project, many schools had just one shared athletic facility, which made locker rooms and weight rooms crowded.
