Reviews of The Pool & Spa Operator Handbook and Standards & Guidelines for Medical Fitness Center Facilities.
Manual Adjustments The colorful 2009 edition of the National Swimming Pool Foundation's Pool & Spa OperatorTM Handbook ($59.95, NSPF, spiral-bound) includes fresh data about regulatory guidelines and operational topics such as disinfection, water balance, chemical testing, record keeping and troubleshooting. In fact, nearly every chapter boasts updated content - from new recommendations for responding to fecal accidents to the National Plasterers Council's latest guidelines for pool resurfacing. Special sections cover drowning prevention, recreational water illnesses, suction entrapment, evisceration, diving accidents, electrocution, and slips and falls. The 280-page manual, available in English and Spanish versions, also features extensive photos and illustrations. And even though it is part of every NSPF Certified Pool/Spa Operator® certification-training course, it's a valuable addition to any aquatic facility's reference library. Buy from Amazon
The Medical Fitness Association's Standards & Guidelines for Medical Fitness Center Facilities ($39.95, Healthy Learning, paperback) offers a less dynamic presentation than the Pool & Spa Operator Handbook, but the black-and-white information it contains is no less valuable. The 184-page book provides a set of national parameters developed by a team of industry professionals that are applicable to the design and operation of certified medical fitness centers, which specialize in a higher level of medical accountability and monitoring than commercial health clubs. The book features extensive appendices with sample job descriptions, a facility certification checklist, AED and CPR training plans, a sample safety-inspection program, a variety of policies and procedures, and a listing of industry resources.
