At a county Board of Education work session Monday, Parrish Construction project manager Clay Bryan reported that more than a foot of rain has fallen on the construction site over the past few weeks, pushing the expected completion date from Dec. 28 to the end of January.

At a county Board of Education work session Monday, Parrish Construction project manager Clay Bryan reported that more than a foot of rain has fallen on the construction site over the past few weeks, pushing the expected completion date from Dec. 28 to the end of January.
The scope of the project at Baldwin includes new soccer and softball fields, tennis courts and two new field houses to accommodate the home baseball, soccer, softball and tennis teams. The facilities are still on track to meet the original budget of $4.5 million.
According to the Union Recorder, Bryan expects one of the field houses to be complete by the end of the week, adding that the tennis courts are complete except for the lighting installation, and concrete for the baseball field plaza has been poured.
The pressure’s on, with spring sports practices scheduled to begin within the next couple of weeks. With rain affecting the durability of the newly laid grass, officials are wary that the surface won’t be ready in time for play.
"We’re nervous that the roots have not gone deep enough in order to truly anchor itself because there was a lot of sand that was brought in," said deputy superintendent Matt Wark.
Luckily, Georgia College administrators has offered their facilities to the high school athletes free of charge during the final stages of construction. Officials anticipate that the new fields will be in working order for the Feb. 8 start of baseball season.
