Edwardsville (Ill.) High School's Lucco Jackson Gymnasium is ready for the 2025-26 school year after moisture released from a rusting sewer line underneath it cased the old floor to buckle.

As reported by The Telegraph of Alton, construction crews removed the entire gym floor and dug up the sewer lateral from inside the gym. The sewer lateral had rusted, which led to multiple openings and moisture to reach the gym floor and cause buckling issues.

The buckling issue was first discovered during preseason practices for the Edwardsville girls volleyball team. The team played all of its home matches at Liberty Middle School for the 2024 season.

Work was completed at the high school gym during the summer.

“The gym looks absolutely beautiful. It was really a well-done floor by Missouri Floor," Edwardsville athletic director Amy Boscolo said, as reported by Matt Kamp of The Telegraph. "We’re really excited to be able to open it up to our kids and our community.

“It looks very similar to the old floor but it is updated and modernized using stain instead of paint."
