The Nevada Board of Regents voted this week to instate a $3.50-per-credit fee to fund an all-sport indoor facility that the athletic department has been requesting for years. The facility is projected to cost $25 million, and the new fee should cover $18 to $20 million. The UNLV Wolf Pack will make up the difference in donations and fundraising.

According to Nevada Sports Net, “The proposal passed with just one 'no' vote from the 13-person panel.”

Prior to the Board of Regents vote, the UNR student government also voted and passed the resolution on the fee. Two members of student government, the president and vice president, were present for the Board of Regents vote, voicing their support for the project.

Nevada’s athletic director, Stephanie Rempe, said, “We are grateful to the Board of Regents for their approval in support of an indoor field house and the resurfacing of Wolf Pack Park and John Sala Field. This is a critical step in paving the way for a facility that will benefit the entire university population and provide a massive improvement in our athletics programs' ability to train year-round and compete for championships.”

UNLV is currently one of 12 FBS schools without an indoor practice facility like the field house. The new facility will provide a much-needed option for teams to practice indoors when the hot, summer days reach more than 100 degrees or there is snow falling in the winter months.

The field house will be, “a pre-fabricated metal building with 110 yards of turf, storage, drop-down nets for baseball/softball and a small lobby.” It will stand at the former location of the campus tennis courts, which were converted to a parking lot years ago, West of the soccer team’s outdoor practice space.

Said Rempe, “We are grateful for the support of ASUN and the student government leadership in sharing our vision in this project and how it will positively impact campus life. We are excited to move forward with this project and realize the vital impact it will have on the university and Northern Nevada.”
