Greensburg Central Catholic High School resurfaced its gymnasium floors this past weekend. School officials said the gym had been ventilated following the sanding and re-coating process, but fumes remained during Monday’s Veterans Day assembly. While in the gym, three students experienced dizziness, light-headedness and a few even fainted.

According to CBS News, “fresh air is usually enough to resolve acute symptoms for most people who experience issues with hydrocarbons, which make up the gym floor coating. Hydrocarbons may have a strong odor and can be irritating.”

The school is gym is now closed and it will not re-open until a thorough examination by industrial hygienists.

School officials released a statement following the incident that read, “The health and safety of our students and staff is our highest priority. We take any potential health concerns seriously and are working diligently to ensure our school environment remains safe for everyone. Rest assured that we are taking all necessary precautions and following expert guidance in addressing this situation.”

They went on to tell CBS News, “there are no anticipated long-term effects from exposure, but anyone experiencing symptoms like fainting or vomiting is encouraged to seek care or call the Pittsburgh Poison Center for help.”

Parents of the hospitalized students spoke with WPXI news, and they told reporters they were disappointed with how the school was handling the incident publicly. According to the parents, the students were more than just “light-headed.” One needed stitches after fainting and another has a concussion.

One parent reported that their child said the smell was, “strong enough that it was apparent as soon as they got off the bus and went into the school.”

The school closed early on Monday following the assembly, and it has transitioned to online learning until Thursday, Nov. 14, when students will return to the classroom. The gym is still being ventilated to reduce the odor.
