St. Albans High School will be high school basketball central today, as the school plays host to numerous games and practices involving area teams.

St. Albans has been the only community in Kanawha County that has not been forced into a "Do not use" status as a result of last week's chemical leak at Freedom Industries that contaminated first the Elk River and then the Kanawha River.

"Our administration has been really good about this. They understand the situation and we want to do what we can to help," St. Albans girls basketball coach Scott James said Sunday.

The Red Dragon boys teams will practice at 8 a.m. today, with the St. Albans girls team practicing at 10 a.m. The girls basketball team from Nitro High School will practice in St. Albans' auxiliary gym at 10 a.m.

At 11:30 a.m., the boys and girls teams from George Washington will practice at St. Albans, and at 2 p.m. a girls basketball game between South Charleston and Capital will tip off in the main gym. Riverside's girls team will practice at 2 p.m. in the auxiliary gym.

South Charleston's boys team will play Riverside at 4 p.m. in the main gym.

Games featuring the boys and girls teams from Hayes Middle School and McKinley Middle School are scheduled to begin at 6 p.m.

"Scott James is the athletic director for Kanawha County right now," GW girls basketball coach Jamie LaMaster said Sunday.

James coordinates a two-day summer shootout for girls basketball programs that is attended by dozens of teams from across the state each year. LaMaster said the experience of running that event likely paved the way for James' ability to put together a schedule on such short notice. LaMaster added that it was not a surprise that James would be quick to ante up.

"That's what friends do for each other. I wouldn't expect anything less out of Scott," LaMaster said. "I've got three games coming up, and without being able to get in a gym I might not be able to practice this week. You just can't do that at this point in the year.

"Consider this, we play at St. Albans next Saturday and they're letting us come and practice on their floor. It shows that Scott and the people at St. Albans High School know what matters," he said.

James said he is unsure how late the games will continue today. In any situation where multiple games are scheduled one after another there runs a risk of delay.

"We're hoping not to get things too backed up, but we'll see," James said. "We just want everybody to be able to come in and get their games and practices in."

St. Albans' girls team defeated Parkersburg at home Saturday in the only game that was played in Kanawha County since Jan. 10.

As a precautionary measure, the girls basketball game between Riverside and Nitro scheduled for Tuesday in Nitro will be played at St. Albans if water service has not been restored.
