Updating a legendary sports venue is always a daunting task, but the sight limitations confronting designers of the Pauley Pavilion renovation and expansion took the challenge to another level — namely, below grade.
For the first time in its near-50-year history, UCLA's basketball venue has a direct link between its court and its locker rooms, which have been placed in the lower of two levels along with other team spaces and the new Pavilion Club. "Very well done," said one judge. "Going underground was a brilliant idea."
The seating bowl itself was revamped with tilt-up seats replacing bleachers and room for an additional 1,000 fans. At street level, a new exterior concourse composed primarily of glass houses a wall of champions, restaurants, restrooms and concessions and merchandise sales.
