The University of South Alabama would like to build an on-campus football stadium and is looking for help from local taxpayers to do it.
The Sun Herald reports that the school is looking to secure financial commitments from both the city of Mobile, Ala., and taxpayers that will total about $15 million to support the on-campus stadium. School officials have estimated the total costs of the project will approach $75 million.
Currently, the school plays its home games at the 70-year-old Ladd-Peebles Stadium, located 8 miles from campus. The proposed stadium would be built on what is currently an intramural field, near the practice facility that is now under construction.

A group of about 250 stadium supporters, including university staff, students and administrators, attended a meeting with city and county officials to voice their support for the plan. City officials may choose not to support the plan, which requests $10 million from them, but to sweeten the deal the university has reportedly pledged to provide $2.5 million to the city to turn Ladd-Peebles into a venue more suitable for high school games.
A vote on the proposal could occur after a July 10 meeting.
