Guiding Members Through Individualized Circuit Strength Programs

Developing a clear and concise guide to circuit strength training will help members get the most out of your fitness center.

Circuit strength training is effective and efficient; but, if members don't realize how the equipment is meant to be used or its benefits, it just sits there. How you educate members on the basics of using a strength circuit - and guide them through individual circuit strength programs - depends on your facility's size and goals. But developing a clear and concise guide to circuit strength training will help members get the most out of your fitness center.

The Lawndale Christian Fitness Center, Chicago, Ill., has experienced great success with group training circuit classes since the facility opened in 2005, according to Supervisor Montsho Fowler. For individual circuit strength workouts, Lawndale relies on a multi-layered system to guide members to success. "In relation to our facility layout, our resistance equipment is numbered and strategically placed to ensure a balanced workout," Fowler explains. "We have wonderful fitness assistants who guide our members/guests throughout this format. To enforce consistency, we issue Resistance Tracking Sheets to every member/guest."

MediFit Program Supervisor Amanda Yost says her facility also implements multiple approaches to help members use circuit strength equipment. "We have an optional machine orientation that every member can take advantage of," says Yost. "We utilize workout cards and a written basic workout for them to follow. We will take members through every machine and write down their settings and appropriate weight. We also provide a 'muscle of the month' bulletin board, which highlights a muscle or group, ... and gives examples of exercises and stretches."

Not all facilities need to implement a circuit strength training guide this detailed, but if your facility's circuit is languishing on the fitness floor, consider using some of these ideas to boost its popularity.

Strength circuit guide ideas

Create a Circuit Workout of the Month. Enlist a different trainer to design a circuit strength workout each month, then put it on laminated index cards and distribute them to members. This helps keep the circuit fresh, and also introduces members to your trainers' individual personalities and training styles.

Develop professional demos. Nothing draws a crowd faster than watching professionals strut their stuff. Have your trainers show all the possibilities your circuit setup offers with hyped, exciting demonstrations at scheduled times. Ask your most charismatic group exercise instructor to emcee, and peak members' interest by making your circuit look fun and user-friendly.

Implement a circuit orientation. Carefully screen your new members to identify the most time-crunched customers. Then, along with a general tour of your facility, offer these members a free, indepth orientation that explains how to use your circuit strength equipment. "One thing I always recommend to members is a no-rest workout," says Yost. "I will have them do opposing muscle group exercises back to back, ... continuing to go back and forth until all sets are complete. This is a great way to keep the heart rate up, and make the workout quicker." This shows members you care about their needs, and, at the same time, helps you compete with the new express facility around the corner.

Rely on personal trainers. If your fitness center offers a free personal training session as a perk for joining, be sure that a thorough explanation of the circuit setup is on the agenda. Make sure that the trainer is prepared to tailor the program for individuals, and gives members the tools to continue on their own. "Every member who joins receives ... a first workout with personalized workout cards that they can follow [afterward]," says Dion Morreale, owner of Woman's Way Fitness Center, Wayne, N.J.

Get members into groups. Woman's Way wasn't having much success using individual circuit orientations, so it switched gears. "We do them in groups (no larger than five) now, [as] apposed to one-on-one," says Morreale. Be sure the employee leading the group circuit orientation is a loud and clear speaker, but also an attentive listener. People can learn as much from questions as they can from a scripted spiel.

Put it on a placard. Posting placards or signs by each piece of circuit equipment is a visual way to guide members through a strength workout. Use them to number equipment in the order to be used, include photos or drawings of the proper way to use the equipment, or even suggest possible reps. The information you include is up to you, but there are some things it never hurts to reinforce. "Form, weight, reps [and] hydration are all very important things that we stress," says Morreale.

Provide support

No matter which method your facility uses to guide members through a circuit, they will have additional questions and concerns. At Woman's Way, "there is always someone on staff [who] can assist them with any questions while they are working out," says Morreale. Yost encourages staff to take a personal approach with each member. "We will take as many notes as we possibly can to help describe the exact movement and feeling that should be accomplished on each machine/exercise," she says. "Many people come to the fitness center so they don't have to think too much; so, we try to make things as easy as possible. I will even ask the member to describe the motion in their own words and I'll write that down, because their own words might trigger the memory of it more than my words would."

Circuit training is effective and efficient, and giving your members the tools to use your facility's strength equipment is essential to getting the word out. "My advice would be to make it simple and offer as much assistance as needed," says Fowler. "Also, employ self-efficacy methods. When members/guest feel confident, they not only improve their fitness level, they become frequent visitors of your facility."
