University of Maryland defensive back Dontay Joyner was arrested last week and charged with telephone misuse and electronic communication harassment.
According to WJLA, the Terrapin student-athlete was held without bond ahead of his June 12 hearing. Electronic harassment charges in Maryland include a variety of incidents, including using internet messaging to “harass, alarm or annoy” an adult or child.
One source claimed that Joyner was contacting his girlfriend and threatening her over text, which prompted the arrest. Joyner’s attorney told the Baltimore Sun that the girlfriend would not press charges, but Joyner has not been released from jail.
An official from the UMD athletics department said in a statement, “We are aware of the situation and have no further comment at this time.”
Joyner transferred to the University of Maryland from Arkansas State where he played from 2023 to 2025. He has played one season with the Terrapins.
