An investigation into concerning locker room behavior at Elk Grove High School in Sacramento, Calif., has been connected to hazing on the varsity football team. School officials conducted an investigation last week, leading to new safety measures in the locker room.
According to the Sacramento Bee, three varsity football players were found to have hazed and sexually harassed a freshman student-athlete and recorded the incident on a cell phone. The perpetrators were identified and suspended for violating Elk Grove High School’s code of conduct. They did not compete in the football team’s season opener last Friday.
In a letter from the school, principal Rudy Ortega said, “We are writing to inform you of a matter that requires our collective attention and action. It has come to our attention that a group of student-athletes have engaged in behaviors that do not align with the standards of conduct and character we uphold at Elk Grove High School. We take these concerns seriously and are committed to ensuring a safe, respectful, and inclusive environment for all students, whether in the classroom, on the field, or in the locker room."
Now, Elk Grove officials have instituted measures, including adult supervision in the locker room to hopefully curb any future hazing. In a full investigation, school officials told Fox40 that the “locker room culture and student-athlete conduct” would all be reevaluated. The investigation has so far found no evidence or allegations of a sexual assault.
“This is a critical moment for reflection, growth, and accountability, not only for the individuals involved but for our athletic program as a whole. We ask that you speak with your student-athlete about the importance of integrity, respect, and responsibility during this process,” Ortega said. Your partnership is essential in reinforcing the values we strive to instill in our students.”
