The Phoenix City Council approved $230 million for the renovation of Talking Stick Resort Arena, home of the NBA’s Phoenix Suns and WNBA’s Phoenix Mercury. The move includes $150 million from the city of Phoenix, which will be generated by tourism-related excise taxes on hotels and rental cars. The team will contribute $80 million and fund any renovations above the $230 million amount. Among the planned renovations are the repair or replacement of mechanical, electrical and plumbing infrastructure; technology and security upgrades; new LED and digital control systems; new furniture, fixtures and equipment throughout the arena; improvements to upper and lower-level seating; locker room upgrades, concourse improvements and more. Texas Tech University is set to break ground on its new Womble Basketball Center today. A ceremony will be held this afternoon for the new facility, which will house both the men’s and women’s basketball programs. Liberty University is in the midst of a $25 million renovation of the Williams Stadium Football Operations Center. The renovation will expand the facility to 65,455 square feet, and enclose the stadium’s northern end. Dartmouth College recently broke ground on a new indoor practice facility. Set for completion in March 2020, the 70,000-square-foot space will help to relieve demand on the Leverone Field House, which is currently the only indoor athletic facility on campus. The new facility’s primary feature will be a 56,000-square-foot turf field, which is nearly three times the size of Leverone’s turf.
