Reviews of Running Tracks: A Construction & Maintenance Manual; Celebrate10000.com
Seemingly simple to build and maintain, running tracks require a lot more planning and design than some facility operators might initially think. This sixth edition of Running Tracks: A Construction & Maintenance Manual (American Sports Builders Association, spiral bound, $44.95) breaks down all facets of a track's evolution, including planning and budgeting, construction requirements, curbs and drains, field events, fencing, surfacing systems, calibration and markings, and care and maintenance. Targeting the high school and college markets, the manual's first revision in three years also includes contact information for track and field's governing bodies (as well as their various competition specifications) and several dozen updated diagrams and illustrations.
As the Philadelphia Phillies limp toward their 10,000th loss, three lifelong Philly sports fans decided to commemorate the first time in sports-franchise history that a team has reached that milestone of misfortune by creating Celebrate10000.com. The site sponsors a "guess the date" contest and allows "Phans" to commiserate by sharing their personal stories. "While sports fans around the world may believe that this milestone is a shameful mark on Phillies franchise history, Celebrate10000.com was created to celebrate the fans who will be standing by the Phillies even when they become the losingest team in professional sports history," says site co-founder Charley DeBow, who adds that he'd like to keep the site active beyond that fateful day - whenever it comes - to provide fans an outlet for their continued frustration.
