Northwestern University is considering using one of its existing lakefront athletic fields to host smaller-capacity home football games while the new Ryan Field is under construction.
As reported by Evanston RoundTable, the university on Tuesday submitted to the city an application for a zoning analysis concerning Lanny and Sharon Martin Stadium, located about 100 feet west of Lake Michigan. The venue, which serves as home to Northwestern men's and women's soccer and women's lacrosse, features a small grandstand on the west side of the field.
City spokesperson Cynthia Vargas wrote Thursday in an email to RoundTable that the proposed temporary facilities would accommodate up to 15,000 spectators and all game day operations, and the city’s analysis will determine whether these structures would meet parking, height and setback requirements for the university’s U3 zoning district.
“The review should be finalized by next week and will likely comply with zoning requirements based on a high-level review,” Vargas wrote. “Following the use determination, Northwestern will need to apply for building and associated permits to authorize the construction of the temporary improvements.”
Joint venture Turner-Walsh Construction, also called the Central Street Consortium, began demolition of the existing Ryan Field on Feb. 12, reported Alex Harrison for RoundTable. According to the city’s weekly zoning reports, Northwestern’s Feb. 23 permit application to lay the new stadium’s foundation is awaiting review by city staff. The university has said it plans to complete construction and host games in the new Ryan Field by fall 2026.
“As this process continues to evolve, the City will ensure robust communication and coordination with the City Council and the community,” Vargas wrote at the end of her email.
