The Army West Point Athletics Association (AWPAA) and the West Point Association of Graduates (WPAOG) held a special ceremony to commemorate the groundbreaking of the Michie Stadium Preservation Project on Aug. 14 at Michie Stadium.
The 61st Superintendent of the U.S. Military Academy, Lt. Gen. Steven Gilland, Army Director of Athletics, Mike Buddie, President and CEO of the WPAOG, Mark Bieger, and Army West Point Head football coach, Jeff Monken, all shared remarks about their excitement about the future of the project and thanked donors specifically for their generosity to get the project underway.
Following remarks, groundbreaking photos were taken with a thank-you donor reception, which was held at the FEN Center. Construction on the project officially broke in April of this year, as the old east stands have been demolished. [WestPoint.edu]
A new athletics facility, including a new football field, is being built at Springfield’s Duggan Academy, and the project should be done in time for the first football game of the season.
“My first reaction is an obvious wow! This place has come a long way from a field that was slightly used to a field that is fully functional,” Springfield Public Schools Director of Athletics Dwayne Early said.
In April 2023, western mass news witnessed some of the very beginning stages of construction on the $14,000,000 project that includes an 1,800-seat stadium.

As local college students head back to class, you will notice some big changes at Augusta University’s Forest Hills campus.
School has started, and so have improvements to some athletic facilities– some of which students will be able to experience pretty soon.
“Our student-athletes want to feel that investment, so they’ve heard a lot about it over the last year or two. So, now as they arrive back to campus this fall, they’re starting to see the investment…,” Augusta University Athletic Director Ryan Erlacher.
One that is making change from the inside out.
“We are renovating the exterior, giving it an all new look, a very modern sleek look. There’s gonna be long strips of tile that are gonna cover the entire building– very metallic look, modern look, gradients of blues, and greys, and whites…,” Erlacher said. “Outside we’re putting new baseball seating in, and a press box, and batting cages, and a score board, and then softball will be after that next season with new seating and a press box as well.” [WJBF]
