Students, faculty and staff back for the fall semester have been enjoying numerous upgrades made to the Student Recreation Center (SRC) on the Washington State University Pullman campus. The SRC experienced a flurry of construction activity during the summer as it underwent several big renovations — all aimed at enhancing the user experience of its patrons.
One of the final projects, the resurfacing of the pool deck and a complete makeover of its mechanical room, was recently completed and the pool and spa are back in service.
The SRC has been one of the busiest buildings on campus since it opened in 2001. It will welcome its 12,000,000th patron this fall. [WSU.edu]
Kaskaskia College has broken ground on a new $9.8 -million gymnasium.
College President George Evans says the 29,000 square-foot facility will all be on one level, unlike the present gym, will have seating for 1,300 spectators, and a state-of-the-art scoreboard and locker room facility.
Evans explains, “The gymnasium that we currently have has celebrated so many successful seasons of multiple sports. It was originally built as a temporary gymnasium in the late 60’s and 70’s. Unfortunately, due to financial reasons, the college had to focus on their mission of education, and we have been making due for some time. But thanks to some low interest rate financing and a combination of grants and fiscal responsibility by the institution we are able to break ground today (Friday).” [Southern Illinois Now]
Just weeks after the baseball season ended, Smokies Stadium in Kodak is up for sale and redevelopment.
The Sevierville Industrial Development Board issued notice Monday that the 30-acre site off Interstate's 40 Exit 407 is available for purchase and conversion into whatever a developer wants to propose. The deadline to submit proposals is 4 p.m. Nov. 15.
The AA Smokies baseball team is moving next spring to downtown Knoxville. The team played its last games in Kodak this month.
Smokies Stadium opened in 2000. Besides hosting millions of fans and hundreds and hundreds of baseball games through the years, it's also seen major artists such as Bob Dylan and Willie Nelson and conventions, gatherings and parties. During the pandemic, it hosted outdoor music shows.
The development board is seeking a single developer to propose a land-use plan. The developer must have prior experience and present a general concept of how the site would be used. [WBIR]
