Daytona Beach, Fla., city commissioners have a $185 million decision to make, a decision that could be as impactful to Daytona Beach as the construction of Daytona International Speedway 65 years ago.

A Clearwater-based company that develops and operates sports, event and entertainment facilities in more than a dozen states crunched a lot of numbers for Daytona Beach and came up with a general concept for a sprawling $185 million sports complex on the city's western edge.

The proposal they put together at the city's request and presented at Wednesday night's City Commission meeting includes both a 10,000-seat stadium and a sports complex with dozens of multi-use fields, courts for various sports, baseball diamonds, a pool, ice rink, locker rooms and concession facilities. Clark County, Nev., commissioners gave the green light to build an arena on the Las Vegas Strip aimed at potentially bringing an NBA franchise to Las Vegas.

The sprawling property would be built on Las Vegas Boulevard between the Sahara and Fontainebleau resorts.

At a zoning meeting Wednesday, commissioners unanimously approved the land use permit.

The LVXP project is also located near the Turnberry Towers where hundreds of people live. Some of them spoke in front of commissioners during the meeting. They say while they have some traffic concerns, they want something built. [Fox 5]

The Medicine Hat Public School Division welcomed members of the community Thursday to the grand opening of its new training facility for the 76 Hockey and Ringette Academy, including an official ribbon-cutting event.

The division worked with Source for Sports to bring an artificial training ice as well as three full-sized nets with goalie backdrops. The facility, located in the strip mall at 140 Maple Ave., also features a weight room and area for stretching and plyometrics.

“We’ve got a great facility here, we can do lots of different things,” says Corey Sadlemyer, who helped develop the academy’s curriculum and programming. [Medicine Hat News]
