Personal Trainers and Client Confidentiality

Personal trainers have a professional obligation to keep sensitive client information private.

Personal trainers often receive private information from their clients. A lot of this material could even be considered confidential. In purely medical or legal settings, personal information is kept confidential by the requirements of law. In other settings, people give personal information to bartenders, beauticians, barbers, manicurists, massage therapists and others. One-on-one relationships of this non-medical, non-legal kind often engender the disclosure of matters that are truly private and should be kept that way. Unfortunately, however, outside of legally protected relationships, such disclosures sometimes make their way to other ears, and even turn into potentially damaging gossip. Some Internet sites even indicate that personal trainers may be a good source for gossip about celebrity clients.
