The framed basketball jersey from her playing days at Marshall University is a reminder that Brandy Robertson is no couch potato.

The trim and energetic Robertson is Exhibit A for leading a healthy lifestyle, and now she is helping others in their quests for health and fitness.

Robertson has opened Brandy's Health & Fitness at 401 Fourth Ave. in South Charleston, where her green No. 4 MU basketball jersey is proudly displayed. She was on the team from 1996 to 2000.

Robertson, who earned a master's degree in exercise science from MU, offers personal training, fitness consulting and nutrition consulting. The guiding principle at Brandy's Health & Fitness is "Plan. Commit. Achieve."

She recently earned a credential in "holistic nutrition," which she said is an important component of achieving fitness.

"Nutrition is 75 percent of fitness," Robertson said.

Prior to opening Brandy's Health & Fitness, Robertson worked at the YWCA, which is also a Nautilus facility. She developed a loyal following, and many of her clients followed her to her new facility in South Charleston.

Her primary service is one-on-one, personal fitness training, "with some small group stuff," she said.

Brandy's Health & Fitness is a well-appointed, attractive facility that has a rubberized floor, gym equipment, shower and changing room and a small sauna. Purple colors accent the interior, while the bright green outside door serves as street level landmark.

Robertson enjoys the one-on-one aspect of personal training, and it's also the best avenue for those who would prefer a little privacy while they train. A public gym is not for everyone.

"It's an intimidating thing for a lot of people," she said.

Her clients include men, women, high school and middle school students and student athletes.

"My oldest client is 83."

When Robertson meets with a new client, she determines his or her fitness goals and conducts an assessment of the client's fitness level. Fitness plans are then developed, and then reaching the stated goals is a collaborative effort.

The goal could be just attaining a base level of fitness or helping someone with balance issues. For example, she works with older clients who need to develop the strength and balance to get out of chairs without falling.

"I train athletes, too," she said.

Robertson uses a lot of free weights in her training programs as well as having clients use their own body weights to develop strength. Bands, medicine balls and stability balls are also used, as are treadmills, elliptical machines and exercise bikes.

Brandy's Health & Fitness has a changing area, bathroom and shower. There is also a small sauna for clients to use.

Her space was formerly a warehouse that has been completely remodeled.

"We tore out the ceiling and came up with the design," she said.

Her friend, Darin Fisher, of Darin Fisher Designer Kitchens "helped with the layout and design. I wanted the color scheme bright and comfortable."

A Kentucky native and lifelong athlete, Robertson said fitness has always been important to her, especially working toward a fitness goal.

"I love the training aspect," she said.
