Saginaw, Mich., is looking to build a new outdoor fitness park where residents can get in a good workout while taking in some fresh air.

The Saginaw City Council this week moved forward with a plan to build the new park, which will be situated near Ojibway Island.

"Saginaw would be the first one in the Great Lakes Bay region to install one of these and get them in use,” Phil Karwat, Saginaw Public Works director, told the Flint ABC affiliate.

"They partner with cities and schools interested in providing best in class programs to promote activity and community wellness,” Karwat said.

Studies show that about a third of people in Michigan are obese and at risk for cardiovascular problems.

Karwat says the campaign offers a mobile app, which park users will be able to access for seven-minute workouts. Stops at each station in the park will last 45 seconds.

"Record through your phones and literally give you workouts that these fitness groups or you can personally take to the site,” Karwat said.

Saginaw already has $60,000 worth of funding to build the park and still needs to raise $115,000 to make it happen.
