A treadmill fire at an LA Fitness St. Petersburg location resulted in minor fire and water damage, causing the facility to close for several days.
According to St. Petersburg Fire and Rescue, the reason for the fire is not known. Lt. Steve Lawrence told the Tampa Bay Times that a treadmill caught fire around 11 p.m. Wednesday night, after the last employee had left.
It was discovered around 5 a.m. on Thursday when the next employee came in for the early morning shift. Two treadmills were damaged beyond use, along with some window damage and soot accumulation throughout the building.
Further fire damage was prevented by the automatic sprinkler system. "The fire suppression system did do its job," said Lawrence. "It was limited fire damage. The water damage can be cleaned up."
