A former gym owner who secretly videotaped women at his Michigan CrossFit location was sentenced to a prison term of three to 20 years on Tuesday.
The Macomb Daily reports that Matthew Krakowski filmed a total of 13 adults and one juvenile with hidden cameras as they used the facility’s showers, bathrooms and changing rooms. Seven adult victims and the parents of the juvenile spoke at the sentencing hearing, which took place in Macomb County Circuit Court.
Krakowski was caught filming the victims at Switch CrossFit last April, and charged the following month. He pleaded no-contest to the charges, which provides some protection in civil court but counts as an admission in criminal court, according to The Macomb Daily.
Krakowski’s sentence includes 11 months for the 13 adult victims, and 36 to 240 months for the juvenile victim because that instance constituted creating child pornography.
Some victims said the sentence wasn’t harsh enough, and pointed out that other people could have been victimized as Krakowski admitted to additional filming, but investigators failed to find evidence of it and he was never charged for additional incidents.
Victims claim that the incident left them scarred, distrustful of public bathroom facilities and paranoid about hidden cameras in hotel rooms.
In a statement, Krawkowski accepted responsibility for his actions, saying, “I am ready to accept my appropriate punishment.”
As for the gym, it changed its name to CrossFit Platoon and remains open under new management. The Macomb Daily reports that many former members have returned.
