Officials who were slated to referee a boys’ basketball game between Olton (Texas) High School and Farwell High School on Tuesday night inexplicably exited the gym after the girls’ portion of the doubleheader and then declined to work the boys' portion of the event.

Following the Farwell girls’ 60-25 win over Olton, the officials emerged from the locker rooms in their street clothes with their bags packed.

The referees conferenced with the coaches as the boys warmed up and then left. When no replacement referees could be found, it was announced the game would be postponed.

Coaches and administrators from both schools declined to speak on the record about the reason for the officials’ departure.

According to the Lubbock Avalanche-Journal, the officials were from the Lubbock Basketball Officials Chapter.
