Southern Mississippi football coach Will Hall reportedly received performance bonuses that he didn't deserve given language included in his contract.
According to Yahoo Sports, Hall, who is in his third year with the Golden Eagles, led the team to the LendingTree Bowl last season, which triggered a $20,000 bonus. An additional $10,000 was released when he won the game.
However, Hall's team did not reach an academic benchmark included in his contract, and as a result he should not have been paid the bonuses for reaching the LendingTree Bowl.
Athletic director Jeremy McClain called the payment of the bonuses an honest mistake.
“It’s just not something we’ve dealt with before,” McClain told The Hattiesburg American, “and quite honestly a clause that should no longer be in our contracts because APR has changed so much.”
Hall's current contract pays him $824,000 annually, and he could earn up to $850,000 in performance bonuses each season.
An agreement has been reached for Hall to pay back the $30,000 on a repayment plan.
