An Indiana man charged with voyeurism at a local YMCA has been sentenced to 240 days of home monitoring.
According to 13News, John Deramus pleaded guilty to one count of voyeurism after he entered a women's locker room at Fishers YMCA in Indianapolis.
Court documents showed that a woman caught Deramus recording her with a phone while she was showering. She and another woman confronted Deramus, and a staff member escorted him to an office and called police.
Officers confiscated Deramus' phone, and staff members told police that Deramus had 38 previous incidents at the YMCA and he had been suspended three times from the facility for entering the women's locker room.
Deramus told officers that he had been in the sauna, had a towel on his head and entered the wrong locker room by mistake. However, footage from a surveillance camera contradicted his story.
The incident that led to Daramus' arrest was preceded by a Feb. 26 incident in which a woman reported being in the shower at the YMCA when someone entered the stall right next to hers. She said all the other stalls were empty. When she finished, she claimed Deramus ran out of the locker room. By the time police arrived, Deramus was gone.
Court documents show that Deramus said he used his cousin's name to get into the YMCA. He claimed to have entered the women's locker room by mistake both times.
Police did find videos of a woman showering at the YMCA on Demarus' phone.
"In the moment I saw him, I was terrified because I assumed he was about to attack me. I hope he gets help and stops violating people in this way. I fear that he will continue to do this behavior and that his actions will escalate," an anonymous victim told 13News in a March 2024 interview.
