A 4-year-old child drown over the weekend at a popular aquatics center in Chandler, Ariz.Â
According to the local NBC affiliate, firefighters responded to the Hamilton Aquatic Center on Sunday around 8:10 p.m. Authorities said the child was underwater for an undetermined amount of time.Â
Lifeguards had pulled the boy from the water and performed CPR until first responders arrived. The boy was later taken to a hospital where he died.Â
At the time, the aquatic center was being rented out for a private party of about 60-80 people and up to 18 lifeguards were on duty.Â
A spokesperson for the City of Chandler said the lifeguards took appropriate action.Â
"To the best of our knowledge, this is the first fatal drowning that has occurred at a City of Chandler aquatic center," the spokesperson told 12News. "Beyond that information, we’ll need to await more details to be determined through the investigation."
Retired firefighter and Drowning Prevention Coalition of Arizona president Jay Arthur said parents should never solely rely on lifeguards to watch their kids at public pools.
“To have a drowning at a public facility like that is very rare, not very common," Arthur said. “Even though we know lifeguards are on duty at those kinds of things, I think as parents we still need to take responsibility.”
This is the third child drowning so far in Maricopa County in 2025.
