Humphreys County (Tenn.) Schools has implemented new guidelines for bags brought to athletic events for the 2025-26 academic year following an incident in which a student brought an airsoft gun to a football game.
Airsoft guns are replica firearms that shoot 6mm plastic BBs, primarily for recreational activities like skirmishes and military simulations. They are designed to look and often feel like real guns but are generally less powerful and primarily used for sport and recreation, not for hunting or self-defense.
As reported by NBC affiliate WSMV in Nashville, Humphreys County Schools created a list of approved items, including the following:
- Clear totes that don’t exceed 12” by 6” by 12”
- Clear storage bags that don’t exceed one gallon
- Small clutch bags that don’t exceed 4.5” by 6.5”
- Cameras with no case
- Binoculars with no case
- Seat cushions and chair backs
- Diaper bags — only allowed for a child two years or younger
Exceptions will be made for medically necessary items after proper inspection at a gate, WSMV reported, adding that all bags will be searched before a person enters the game and the guidelines will be enforced by the Humphreys County School System and the Humphreys County Sheriff’s Office.
