The University of Nebraska has banned two students from athletic events following an investigation into fan misconduct at last week’s home basketball game against Purdue.
As reported by Lincoln ABC affiliate KLKN, citing athletic department sources, two students seated in the student section at Pinnacle Bank Arena were ejected from the Feb. 10 game, which Purdue won in overtime, after security personnel observed them engaging in unsportsmanlike and inappropriate behavior.
One student was ejected for throwing an object that hit individuals seated on the Purdue bench in the first half. Officials said the student had his tickets revoked and received a permanent ban from obtaining a valid ticket to any ticketed Husker athletic event, KLKN's Mark Fischer reported.
A second student was ejected for repeatedly using inappropriate and unsportsmanlike language directed at Purdue’s bench after previously being warned. As the student left the arena, officials said, they took two water bottles from the team bench and threw them to someone in the crowd near their seat. That student has had his tickets revoked and received a one-year ban from obtaining a valid ticket to any ticketed Husker athletic event.
Per Fischer, the athletic department said it continues to investigate a separate incident involving an unidentified individual.
“Nebraska Athletics is committed to providing a safe and secure fan experience at all athletic events, with priority on the well-being of the student-athletes, coaches, staff, and game officials,” the athletic department said in a statement, as reported by KLKN. “Any individuals in attendance who conduct themselves in a manner inconsistent with our fan code of conduct may face penalties including ejection from the event, loss of tickets and the ability to purchase tickets in the future.”
