The Dallas Rangers are investigating allegations of racial harassment at a West Dallas youth baseball camp.
According to Dallas News, a parent reported that two youth athletes at the under-10 baseball camp targeted his son, who is Black, called him racist names and mocked him with animal noises while he was batting. The instigating youth players were not Black.
The parent reported the incident to coaches and front-office staff at the time.
"The Rangers were recently made aware of an incident alleging statements made by participants at our academy facility," the club said in a statement. "The club takes this type of accusation very seriously and the alleged conduct will not be tolerated. The club is currently conducting an investigation into this incident. As this incident is still under review and as the allegations involve minors, the club will have no further comment."
The Rangers’ Youth Academy hosts baseball and softball camps to local children, hosts clinic and leagues, and provides low- or no-cost programming. It opened in 2016 with assistance from the MLB All-Star Legacy initiative.
Team officials have not offered a timeline for the investigation or what steps the public can expect to see taken. Programming has not been canceled or rescheduled as the investigation continues.
