Augusta University Opens Alvin and Yvette Harris Sports Performance Center
If one phrase could amply describe the new Alvin and Yvette Harris Sports Performance Center at Augusta University it's "game-changer." It was a common theme shared by the speakers during the ribbon-cutting event held Wednesday, Oct. 22, to officially open the center and honor the donors who made it possible.
"This facility is a game-changer. It will surely transform the way our student-athletes train, the way they compete and the way they grow," said Augusta University President Russell T. Keen. "It equips our student-athletes to be their best on the field, on the court, in the classroom and in life. The amenities are outstanding, and the impact will be felt for generations."
New Strength and Conditioning Coach Jacob Topple is witnessing a shift.
"It has become an absolute game-changer with what we're able to do with our student-athletes. We can roll 40 to 50 athletes through in 45 minutes and get done exactly what we need to do as far as speed development, mobility and strength," Topple said. "Our programming has become more efficient, and I can already see the impact on our student-athletes."
John M. Coyne Recreation Center Natatorium Renovation Begins
The long-awaited renovation of the John M. Coyne Recreation Center’s natatorium is coming to fruition.
The estimated $14 million first phase of construction is expected to start in the spring with City Council recently approving a $52,053 CMR contract with Higley Construction.
“The CMR is very important for a project of this size, to get the expertise of a construction manager in there,” Brooklyn Mayor Ron Van Kirk said. “Higley is the one that we’ve chosen. They come very highly recommended with a lot of projects like this under their belt.
“Once the project starts, they’re actually managing the entire project. They’ll be the boots on the ground every day managing all the different contractors that’ll actually be doing the work.”
Pickleball Franchise Opens New Location in Austin
One fast-growing pickleball franchise is starting to achieve a citywide network in Austin. The Picklr has announced a third Austin-area location that will open in December 2026 at 7107 West Hwy. 71, Ste. D1 in Southwest Austin.
This facility, dubbed The Picklr Austin Oak Hill, will span 38,000 square feet and contain eight indoor courts made with proprietary outdoor surfacing, three of which will be championship-sized. There will also be a pro shop and places to hang out, host events, and watch people play.
It will welcome players of all levels, whether they're playing casually, in a league, or in tournaments, plus exclusive member programming. Players can up their skills with certified instructors in what a press release calls "one of the most advanced pickleball development programs in the country."
