Northern Arizona University athletic department this week announced an alternate identity for its athletics programs, welcoming the Astrojacks to Northern Arizona. The new alternate identity was chosen to recognize and celebrate Flagstaff and the greater Northern Arizona region's rich lunar legacy, including Flagstaff being named the world's first International Dark Sky City in 2001.
The Lumberjacks will play under the Astrojacks name in Flagstaff six times during the 2024-25 athletic seasons, featuring a familiar but interstellar color scheme of Nova Navy, Stardust Gold, and Pluto Blue, in celebration of the revolutionary discovery of the planet Pluto that was made in Flagstaff. The Astrojacks will compete on the following dates in 2024-25:
- Astrojack Soccer - Thursday, September 19th vs. New Mexico at 7pm – Lumberjack Stadium
- Astrojack Volleyball – Thursday, October 17th vs. Montana at 6:30pm – Rolle Activity Center
- Astrojack Women's Basketball – Thursday, January 23rd vs. Eastern Washington and Saturday, January 25th vs. Idaho
- Astrojack Men's Basketball – Thursday, February 20th vs. Idaho and Saturday, February 22nd vs. Eastern Washington
The primary mark features multiple cosmic characters, including a symbolic "A" in the Astrojacks brand font embodying a space shuttle prepared for launch upward and onward into the galaxies beyond. Planetary rings surround the lettering in an upward left-to-right trajectory to signify the exploration and adventure ahead right alongside our loyal Northern Arizona fans.
No alternate identity is complete without a mascot so just as Paul Bunyan has his faithful Babe the Blue ox by his side, Louie the Lumberjack now has his cosmic companion – Blouie the Space Ox. Proudly displaying the Astrojacks primary logo on center chest, Blouie the Space Ox is leading the way as our super space pioneer. All Astrojack games will feature custom team uniforms, one-of-a-kind fan giveaways, contests, special entertainment, and some of the greatest family-friendly fun in the galaxy.
The Astrojack brand identity was created and designed by NAU Athletic staff members alongside local Flagstaff partner, Mountain Mojo Group. Astrojack merchandise, including custom NIL student-athlete merchandise will be available for purchase soon and fans can get their hands on Astrojacks promotional items first at the "Meet the Jacks" community event on Friday, Aug. 16 in the J. Lawrence Walkup Skydome.
