The University of New Mexico athletic department announced Tuesday that admission to outdoor track & field events, baseball and softball games, and women's soccer matches will now be free to the general public.
These sports join women’s swimming & diving, men’s and women’s tennis, and men’s and women’s golf home events as complimentary, non-ticketed competitions, according to the announcement at golobos.com. Meanwhile, women’s volleyball and indoor track & field meets hosted at the Albuquerque Convention Center will remain ticketed events.

This move marks one of the first fan-focused initiatives introduced by university vice president and director of athletics Fernando Lovo and his new leadership team. The goal is to enhance the overall fan experience and deepen community engagement with Lobo Athletics.
“Engaging our community in all aspects of Lobo Athletics is one of our highest priorities,” Lovo said, per the announcement. “By offering complimentary admission to several of our Olympic sports, we’re making a strategic decision in access, energy, and community pride. We want more fans, families, and young athletes across New Mexico to experience the passion of our student-athletes and the excitement of college athletics up close. This initiative is about more than just attendance — it’s about building a stronger connection between the Lobos and the community we proudly represent.”
In lieu of purchasing tickets to these now non-ticketed sports, fans are encouraged to continue supporting Lobo Athletics in other impactful ways. This includes joining the Lobo Club, contributing to the Lobo Alliance, making a gift to sport-specific enhancement funds, or renewing and purchasing season tickets, mini plans, and group ticket packages for football, men’s basketball and women’s basketball.
The UNM announcement also points out that postseason competitions for all sports may still be ticketed based on NCAA or conference requirements.
