Hundreds of people braved the colder-than-normal spring weather and lined up from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the three Little Caesars locations in Wichita Falls to take part in the promotion.
At the Seymour Highway site, the line quickly grew out the door of the small lobby as employees kept restocking bottles of soda and continuously cut and boxed the pepperoni pizzas trying to keep up with the rush.
Little Caesars tweeted out the promotion on March 16: "If a #16 BEATS a #1 in men's basketball TONIGHT, you could score a @LittleCaesars Lunch Combo!"
It had never been done in the NCAA men's tournament. No. 1 seeds were 132-0 against No. 16 seeds at March Madness.
That was until University of Maryland, Baltimore County made history by stunning the tournament's No. 1 overall seed, Virginia, 74-54.
UMBC's Max Portmann, a Rider graduate, had one of the best seats in the country for the upset.
"We believed we could do it. I think a lot of guys were lost for words, though," Portmann told the Times Record News of the experience.
"It was just a hard thing to process. It was more like we were just taking it all in."
