Facility Managers Clamp Down on Fan Movement During the National Anthem

Joe Waters respects his country more than he does concessions sales. The fulltime truck mechanic, who also worked a pizza stand inside the Cumberland County Crown Center in Fayetteville, N.C., proved that in April when he walked off the arena job in protest after being told by management that he couldn't pause from his duties behind the counter during the playing of the national anthem. Soon after, Spinners Pizza & Subs followed suit, announcing that it was ending its relationship with the Crown Center, which hosts minor league hockey and arena football, among other non-sporting events.

Game-Day Recycling Saves Athletic Departments Money and Helps Communities

Separating recyclables from game-day trash saves athletic departments money at the landfill and helps communities in immeasurable ways. But UC Berkeley is far from alone; if more universities had successful programs in place there'd be no need for RecycleMania. The brainchild of Ed Newman (Ohio University Campus Recycling) and Stacy Edmonds Wheeler (Miami University Campus Recycling), RecycleMania began in February 2001 as a competition between the two schools to see which could recycle the most over a 10-week period. Six years later, 201 colleges and universities are involved, competing in different contests to see which institution can have the highest recycling rate or can collect the largest amount of recyclables per capita, the largest amount of total recyclables, or the least amount of trash per capita. Since 2004, RecycleMania has partnered with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's WasteWise program, and that year it received the National Recycling Coalition's Outstanding Recycling Innovation Award.

Soccer Players and Fans Benefit from a North American Building Boom

Soccer players, and fans of the world's most popular sport, are benefiting from an unprecedented North American building Boom. How the different fields interrelate constitutes another important consideration. In strictly recreational settings, fields are sometimes laid out without berms, bleachers or other obstructions between them so that practice fields can be striped in either a north-south or east-west direction. This helps reduce wear around goalmouths and areas between fields, the two most heavily trafficked spaces during competitive play. If a complex's owner hopes to attract tournaments, fields should be laid out a minimum of 30 feet apart in all directions (50 feet is preferred). Even greater clearance should be provided for central spectator areas that serve more than one field (in cases in which two fields are laid out parallel to each other). Tall barriers, such as suspended net systems, are recommended to contain errant shots behind goals.Naturally, the addition of a large spectator venue to the mix will complicate things. Sites large enough to hold the infrastructure required of a professional sports venue aren't easy to come by in many cities, let alone sites big enough to hold a stadium and a dozen soccer fields. In addition, issues such as parking and recreational field placement (secondary fields shouldn't sit in the shadow of the larger structure, for example) are far more difficult to finesse in such cases.

Concessions Operators Cater to Ticket-Holders' Refined Tastes

With menu items ranging from raw fish to fresh-carved beef, stadium concessions operators are catering to the more refined tastes of the average ticket-holder.Hot dogs and double cheeseburgers are still the park's big concessions sellers - this is cattle country, after all. But according to park owner Johnny Blevins, the inclusion of the $6.95 tuna sandwich on the menu during Splash Kingdom's inaugural 2006 season was a key reason daily average per-patron concessions sales topped the $4.50 mark - a full dollar better than preseason projections. On some days at the 2,000-bather-capacity, 10-acre park, concessions sales approached $6 a head. "Whether we sell a lot of tuna sandwiches or not, it brings our entire menu image up a notch," Blevins says. "It represents something different, something people are not expecting at a little water park. And it makes the $4.95 price on our double cheeseburger look like a giveaway."
